How to recognize a histamine intolerance

histamine intolerance symptoms

There are many different intolerances. Some are common knowledge. Others are just coming into the public eye.

Histamine intolerance is an intolerance that is fairly new on the scene. Histamine wasn’t even described as an intolerance until early in this century. It’s estimated that at least 1-3% of the world’s population deals with this health concern, too.

If you think you or someone you know has a histamine intolerance, it’s important to understand the condition and know what signs to look for.

What is histamine intolerance?

Most intolerances are marked by fairly predictable signs. If you feel bloated after drinking a glass of milk, you may have a lactose intolerance. If you eat a piece of fruit and get a stomach ache, you might have a fructose intolerance. In each of these cases (and most others), the issue is directly connected to a lack of the digestive enzyme required to break down the intolerant element.

Histamine is a unique intolerance that isn’t directly connected to a lack of histamine itself. On the contrary, it takes place when the body suffers from a surplus of the compound. This happens when it doesn’t create enough of the enzyme Diamine Oxidase (DAO) to break down ingested histamine in the intestines. This DAO deficiency leads to the body absorbing too much histamine into the blood.

What are histamine intolerance symptoms?

Histamine intolerance can come from a few underlying causes, such as gastrointestinal disorders, infectious diseases, and heart disease. So, if any of these are in the picture, it immediately makes excessive histamine a possibility.

In addition, there are various histamine symptoms to watch out for, including:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Brain fog or dizziness
  • Restlessness or sleeplessness
  • Palpitations
  • Colds and runny or stuffy noses
  • Eczema, itchiness, or heat and redness
  • Gastrointestinal problems

These symptoms can come from eating foods that contain histamines, such as tomatoes, spinach, yogurt, red wine, mushrooms, or eggplant.

Is there a good histamine intolerance treatment?

There are multiple ways you can treat a histamine intolerance. An obvious first step is to reduce your uptake of ingested histamine.

Going on a low histamine diet can help manage symptoms and reduce discomfort. As a word of warning, this is an intensive diet that should always involve the guidance and oversight of a dietician.

A Diamine Oxidase supplement (or DAO supplement) is also a helpful tool. This gives your digestive system the support it needs to break down histamines before they can get into your bloodstream.

In addition to a DAO enzyme, you can fuel your body with other supplements, such as vitamins C and B6, quercetin, zinc, and copper — all of which are found in Intoleran’s cozidase supplement. These help your body naturally increase its DAO enzyme production on its own.

Living with a histamine intolerance

Histamine intolerance may be a new concept, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating one. With the right treatments — through both diet and supplementation — it’s completely possible to manage this condition to help you enjoy your food again and enhance your overall quality of life.
