Lactase 20,000 is our highest-dose lactase product: 20,000 FCC of lactase. Due to its high dosage, this product is particularly suitable for digesting large amounts of lactose from food and for people with severe lactose intolerance.* The divisible tablets are easy to dose, come in a small, easy-to-use container, and are suitable for children 2 years and older.
Lactose (Milk Sugar)
Lactose is one of the FODMAPs; fermentable carbohydrates (or sugars). Lactose, also known as «milk sugar,» is found primarily in milk and other dairy products such as cream, custard, cottage cheese, mascarpone, fromage frais, cookies, and cakes. Additionally, lactose can also be found in processed meats, chips, sweets, soft drinks, breakfast cereals, and certain medications and dietary supplements. Therefore, it is always important to read food labels carefully. Lactose can be classified under different names, such as powdered milk, whey, milk sugar, and milk solids.
Lactose Digestion in the Body
The digestive enzyme lactase is responsible for the digestion of lactose. In the intestine, the enzyme lactase breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose so that it can be absorbed through the intestinal wall. If too little of the enzyme lactase is present, as in lactose intolerance, lactose cannot be broken down and therefore cannot be sufficiently absorbed in the small intestine.
