Lactose (milk sugar)
Lactose is one of the FODMAPs; fermentable carbohydrates (sugars). Lactose, also known as “milk sugar,” is found primarily in milk and other dairy products such as cream, custard, mascarpone, fresh cheese, biscuits, and cakes. Lactose can also be found in processed meats, chips, sweets, soft drinks, breakfast cereals, and some medications and dietary supplements. Therefore, it is always important to read labels carefully. Lactose can be referred to by various names, such as milk powder, whey, milk sugar, and milk solids.
Digestion of lactose in the body
The digestive enzyme lactase is responsible for the digestion of lactose. In the intestine, the lactase enzyme breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose so that it can be absorbed by the intestinal wall. If the lactase enzyme is too low, as in lactose intolerance, the lactose cannot be broken down and therefore cannot be sufficiently absorbed in the small intestine.
